Ten Things That Will Get You Hired - More Good Advice!

By JLP | September 12, 2006

Here’s some more good advice for those looking for a job. The article, 10 Things That Will Get You Hired, written by Laura Morsch of CareerBuilder.com, offers the following 10 tips to landing that perfect job:

1. Customize your résumé and cover letter.

2. Diversify your search.

3. Don’t go solo.

4. Find a company where you fit in.

5. Don’t get discouraged.

6. Always be prepared.

7. Be on time.

8. Dress and act the part.

9. Listen more than you talk.

10. Ask good questions.

The points are all pretty much common sense, but I’m sure lots of people would do well to freshen up on them. Read the full article here.

Being prepared and dressing the part are extremely important. I’ve always found that the attire is a sign of respect more than what you might be wearing to work on any given day.

Along with listen more than you talk I would add don’t sell yourself short; have confidence in yourself.

The advice is good, but the article doesn’t have any of the details on how to do any of those things. So I thought I’d suggest that we fill in that gap here. Several of those points could easily be turned into books, and have been. So if anyone else has suggestions about the best books they’ve read on each of those, I’d love to have the recommendations.

Since I suggested it, obviously I have one in mind. The third point, “Don’t Go Solo” is about networking. The book that made it clear to me what networking is really about, as opposed to the perception of an old boys’ network, was Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty by Harvey Mackay.

[...] Given the time of year, I thought it would be relevant to link to a good, but simple, article regarding interviewing. AllFinancialMatters has an article covering 10 basic job search tips. While these tips might be elementary to the more seasoned job searchers, everyone can probably use a refresher now and again. One of my favorite points from this list is: 8. Dress and act the part.
