8 Ways to Identify Your Special Talents

By JLP | August 8, 2006

I read a lot of books. Some of them are good, some are bad, and some I keep coming back to. Goals, by Brian Tracy is one of those that I keep coming back to. If you haven’t read it, you OWE it to yourself to either buy one or check one out from your local library. You won’t be disappointed.

In the book, Brian Tracy lists eight ways to help you “identify and determine your special talents and what you are uniquely suited to do.” It’s true that all of us have special talents and abilities. Brian Tracy believes that for us to be truly happy AND successful at what we do, we must be doing something that utilizes our special talents. If you are a young person, this list might help you avoid years of pain and suffering doing something that really isn’t your calling. If you are an older person who is already established in a job you don’t like, this list might help you figure out your next step. Now, here’s the list:

1. You will always be the best and happiest at something that you love to do.

2. You do it well.

3. This talent has been responsible for most of your success and happiness in life, up until now.

4. It is something that was easy for you to learn and easy to do.

5. It holds your attention.

6. You love to learn about it and become better at it all your life.

7. When you do it, time stands still.

8. You really admire and respect other people who are good at what you are most suited to do.

There you have them. I was going to add my thoughts to each of these but decided that they speak for themselves.

So,… what are YOUR special talents and abilities? Are you doing what you love? I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out BrianTracy.com

I read The Goal ten years ago. It is a great book, and should be required reading in high school.

Is it possible to have “balance” as your special talent?

I think this is mine. I connect with people, I’m a good teacher, and I am highly analytical, and I inspire trust from people. And I enjoy using all of the above qualities, but none in pure isolation.

I have parlayed these skills into careers in sales, marketing, technology, and finance at various stages of my life. My next real step is the development of leadership ability. I think it’s been a dormant quality that I have needed to gradually nurture and become more comfortable with.
